Hello Wayne,

I played a bit with the Google API and there is an API called Distance Matrix https://developers.google.com/maps/documentation/javascript/distancematrix that does exactly that and returns the distance between two locations. The example in the documentation seems to work fine https://jsfiddle.net/gh/get/library/pure/googlemaps/js-samples/tree/master/dist/samples/distance-matrix/jsfiddle

Another option would be to use the Microsoft alternative which seems to be less restrictive than Google. https://www.bing.com/api/maps/sdk/mapcontrol/isdk/distancebetweentwolocations#JS

However, if you only want to get the distance in a straight line and you have the coordinates of the cities, that can be done with the haversine formula. There are some good examples using JavaScript in this StackOverflow post https://stackoverflow.com/questions/18883601/function-to-calculate-distance-between-two-coordinates
