check unique field before proceeding

is there a way to make the a record type data page , check if a unique field is entered before , before proceeding to the next field 

currently it only shows it was entered before only when the submit button is pressed

After checking a record, you can have a custom code/JavaScript that will prevent the form from submission.

i have found a way around 

but yes, indeed i want the field to be checked in real time
