Edit used Formula

I need to alter a formula, but I'm getting the message that I can't change the field due to dependencies in tasks and triggers. Are there workarounds on this?

 Since altering the formula may be an issue, I would like to suggest creating another formula field and copying the formula from the previous one so it gets you a fresh set of field. I am thinking that the system automatically preserves the alteration of the field to avoid failing and possible incompatibility issues.
